2001 Camry....10 amp Gauge fuse blows when shifting from D to 2nd
 

My mother's 2001 Camry has been blowing the 10 amp Gauge fuse often...automatic transmission....just discovered that instead of starting off in Drive if you move the lever down to 2nd it blows this fuse immediately....I think she has been accidentally going past Drive when selecting......anybody have any experience why doing this would blow that fuse?

Much more common is the backup light wiring between then trunk body and trunk lid can fail causing a short and a blown fuse when the shifter moves to Reverse.

If the fuse blows between Drive and 2nd. There is a rotary electrical switch on the transmission gear shifter arm. This switch moves in sync with the rotation of the shifter arm that goes into the trans. The switch is there to illuminate the correct gear shift indicator bulb on the dash and tell the computer which gear the trans is in.

Check the wiring at the switch and switch for shorts.
