87 camry 2.0 manual question about Engine idle dropping.
 

Hello to all I have a 87 Camry 2.0 manual and have the following problem. Only when the car is extremely hot (been driving it a while) and then you turn off engine then try to start it again after 2 minutes or so the car will start right up but the rpm's will drop way low to 400 sometimes lower and sound like it will cut off. The problem so far is easily fixed by giving it a lot of gas then driving the car or turning the car off and starting it again. The wired thing is it only does it intermittently not all the time and only when the car is hot and has been driven a lot.
Things I have done to try to fix this. Taken off the EGR and try to clean it. It was so dirty I replaced with new EGR. After replacing the EGR it has only done the same problem 2 times again but not as bad as before replacement of EGR. However it still did it 2 times after replacing EGR which indicates to me there is another problem at hand here. The car also has a new radiator, starter, battery, alternator, thermostat, air filter, belts all, and a new radiator cap. Please advise and help me as to if someone out there on the forums knows what this problem is or has experienced a similar problem and what can be done to fix this problem. Have you replaced the vacuum lines? I had a Sentra of that age doing that and it turned out to be a vacuum issue.

No I have not because there is nothing wrong with them. I have checked them visually and physically and can't find any error or problems with them. I think it might be a fuel related problem not sure perplexed here.

Have you tried replacing the fuel filter? Also check the lines coming off of the tank. It sounds almost like your system isn't pressurized. Check the gas cap itself. If the gasket on it is hard and glazed replace it.

Good suggestions fuel filter I think that was done already I will double check though. Where is the fuel pump located at on the car I can't find it please advise thanks.

The fuel pump is inside the tank on these little windup cars. The filter is either mounted on the fire wall or in line with the tank, probably just ahead of the right rear wheel. It is a $16 part and takes about 5 minutes to change. I'd do it on principal, a tank full of bad gas can ruin one.

If the filter doesn't help, take off the fuel pressure regulator (no, I don't know where it is at) and see if Autozone or Advance or whoever you use can test it. That thing going out can cause an engine to run really, really badly.

Good suggestion I will do all with time but 1st I will do this test. I was auto zone and they printed out how to instructions on how to test the engine coolant temperature sensor which if bad could cause my problem or similar things. So I will ohm test that tomorrow if I can.

Worth a try, had a '01 Windstar whose coolant sensor went out and caused all kinds of low-speed performance problems. You should also have a coolant temperature switch http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...&parentId=52-0 (if your set up is like my '90 Camry) right next to it on the thermostat housing. I would guess the test procedure is similar. May as well check that while you're there.

Have you cleaned the Mass Airflow Sensor?

Be glad you don't have my Camry. I'm in the middle of having to rebuild the engine. It came very, very close to being sent to Pull A Part.

I did not check the sensor that you speak of nor have I ever seen it. I am going to take a break now enough time has been spent here. I checked this one.

It checked out fine and so I am guessing the other one is okay will test it later. Well sorry to hear about your car man what the hell happened? How many miles on it when it died and what caused it? Well get the parts from CAP Google it they are in Richmond va 1 of a kind salvage yard THE BEST because you can go online and check their inventory before you go visit them in person COOL HAH. Well good luck I have to wait until the weather is warmer to test my car and see if it is still even doing the problem anymore. It has not so far but its been cool out lately.
