1995 Camry 215000 miles.

A long time ago I replaced both half shafts. After a month the bolts loosened up and the shafts partially disconnected.

I had it towed and reinstalled the half shafts and used locl tite. Monitored and stayed tight for a few years I think.

Was checking these sample bolts since I was under changing the oil and one bolt was almost off. These are long hex bolts
The rest were a little loose. Right side.

The left side had one slightly loose.

My theory is I have a power steering pump leak that I have not fixed yet and it drips down to the lowest bolt which was almost off.
Power steering pump is right above half shaft on right side and the whole area has power steering fluid on it. It could be leaking from a hose or the power steering reservoir. This make sense.

Will be checking further.

 

Bolts?

Axle nut, half shaft support bearing or ?

The PS and trans diff use the same fluid.

 

These are the long hex bolts that hold the inner part of half shaft to the transmission.

Will power wash the area and look for leaks. .

 

Puzzled now.

The circled bolt(s) hold on the drivers side differential bearing retainer housing. This housing holds the drivers side differential bearing which holds the diff gear case into the trans housing. Why these bolts would back out is a mystery.

If using Loctite make sure the bolt and hole threads are clean and free of oil.

Torque to 14 ft-lb.

If you clever you might make/find a bolt retaining tab washer as shown in the link below.

Thanks for the link. Will do. Will torque and use one that can fit in the area. Did not torgue before, just tighten..
Will also power wash the area to see where leak is coming from but just had a blizzard so will have to wait.
