Rough idle with no codes
 

I have a 1997 LE Camry. My Camry has a rough idle and dies on me. I have no error codes. I have changed out the Coolant Temp. sensor, EGR, EGR VSV, fuel pump relay and the Idle Air control valve. The problem still remains. I tried resetting the computer but can not stop the car from dying. I changed out the fuel pump a couple years ago. I am planning on changing out the fuel pressure regulator. Is there anyone who can think of something that could be the problem, please? I am at my wits end.

Did the problem just start one day?

Any air leaks in intake?

If you can keep the engine running until it warms up does it run any better?

Might look at the cam/crank sensors.

Try unplugging the first O2 sensor and determine if this changes things.

When the engine is running remove the vacuum hose from the pressure regulator to check for possible gasoline, as in the regulator leaks.

Make sure the EGR is off. Unplug off the vacuum hose going to the VSV and plug the nipple it was connected to.

Yes, the car is a 4 cylinder.
Yes, I believe it just started one day. I thought it was my power steering pump locking up which was dragging the rpms down.
I do not believe that there is any air leaks in the intake.
When it is warm it does the same but it does not seem consistent. Sometimes it seems fine and then it is not.
I recently changed the crank sensor so it is new. If it was one of those, it would affect the car when it is on the highway and it seems to run great on the highway and going down the street.
If it was the O2 sensors, would I not get a code error?
I will try those other things when I can get some time from work.

Is the PS locking up, this can happen?

You don't always get codes when you think you should.

The car has ODBII. You can get a code reader/scanner that outputs real time data. Data from the time the engine is running OK can be compared to when its not.

All I know is it was making noise so I replaced it.

I have a reader but I do not know if it reads real time.

What model of reader?

The reader does not have real time reading capabilities. I am going to buy one that does though. .

I replaced the fuel regulator but it did not help. I am going to replace my fuel pump when I get one and see if it helps. I should have done it when I had it out. I replaced it about 5 years ago.

I unplugged my O2 sensor and it did not help but it did not give me an error code like I thought it would.
