The cost and effort required to replace a fuel door is probably less than you might think. Here are the steps.

This article applies to the Toyota Camry (1997-2011).

If the spring on your fuel door breaks or becomes damaged due to excessive wear, which some Toyota Camry owners cite as a common problem with this otherwise high-value sedan, you will need to purchase a replacement spring clip. Unfortunately, you won't be able to head down to a local auto parts store for your purchase. A replacement fuel door spring clip can only be purchased through a local Toyota dealership, or of course you can find one in a junk yard, so you'll need to make a stop there before starting this project. You'll be happy to know your total DIY cost for this simple project is quite minimum. Let's get started!

Materials Needed

  • Credit card (optional)
  • Pencil (optional)
  • Replacement spring clip
  • Flat head screwdriver

Step 1 – Prop up the release lever to your fuel tank

Use a pencil, screwdriver, or other similarly sized item to prop up the release lever to your fuel tank and keep it open. You don't want the lever to revert to its normal position while you work. Pulling the lever will change the pin in the fuel door to the "open" position.

Step 2 – Open the fuel door

You have a number of options here. You can use a key, credit card, or your fingernail to open the fuel door; although, beware not to scratch your paint. For this reason, it's recommended that you use a credit card. Pull the fuel door completely open, so you have optimum room to work.

Step 3 – Replace damaged fuel door spring clip

  • Using a flat head screwdriver, pry out the old spring.
  • You are now ready to mount your fuel door spring replacement clip.
  • The spring clip mounts easily (see figure below) with only two retention points for easy installation.

Step 4 – Finish up

Remove the pencil from under the lever. Close the fuel door and check your work.

  • Pull the fuel door release lever once more to ensure it is functioning properly.
  • If your fuel door is not functioning properly, recheck the spring clip to ensure it is securely in place.
  • Check your retention points to ensure the spring clip is properly in place.

Pro Tip

You might need to head down to a local Toyota dealer for additional assistance if you experience further difficulty in completing this repair.
