ok I'v got an 86 camry and the clutch master cylinder has gone out. I'm trying to bleed the line so I can just add more fluid and run it as is until I can get it fixed but I seem to be having issues with this whats the best way to do this. Also any guesses on what it would cost to have a shop fix the blasted thing?

 

What is wrong with the cylinder and how does adding fluid help?

 

Well all the clutch fluid leaked out inside by the clutch pedal and when that happend the pedal no longer worked. I figuered that if I put fluid back in it would work for awhile.

 

the fluid will leak out as you continue doing that... I think you need the fix the clutch fluid.

 

There is a bleeder valve on the slave cylinder, looks the same as the ones used to bleed the brakes.

Find a small section of hose that can be pushed tightly on to the valve nipple. Fill the master cylinder with fluid.

Have an assistant depress the clutch pedal while you open the valve and allow fluid/air to bleed out. When both stop coming out, close the valve and have this assistant release the clutch pedal.

Repeat the process above until only fluid comes out (no air bubbles). During the process monitor the master cylinder fluid level and top off as required to prevent air from entering the system.

Once the bleeding process is complete and the clutch is working, check the fluid level frequently.

Note: The clutch fluid is the same as brake fluid, it will damage painted surfaces, etc.

 

yea...tryed that but I guess there was to much air coming in through whatevers leaking for it to work. Just going to replace the whole cylinder asap. thanks though.

 

The job is a good DIY.

When replacing the cylinder bench bleed it first. Basically this is filling the reservoir with fluid then with the line to the slave cylinder disconnected the pump the master cylinder until all the air comes out. You can do this with the cylinder in or out of the car.

The fluid will damage paint, wash off any fluid the comes into contact with paint.
