2004 Camry VVT Timing chain replacement
Needs some feedback in regard to 2004 Camry with 2.4L. I have the death rattle going on with my timing chain after 304K. Was wondering if most people replace the VVT gear assembly or just clean it out and put it back. Is there really anything in it to go bad? springs etc?
Also whats results are people getting with china made kits? like from Autoparts warehouse, CNS Auto etc. You get a lot more in one of those kits(ie VVt gear assy) but cheaper isn't always better. Thanks |

what happens is the guides wear out then the cogs and chains you can replace (its a kit )
you have done well for chains to reach 300,000 which is rare normally they are replaced at 200,000 this is the kit you need..... on ebay US $152.99 Made in Japan T031K OSK Timing Chain Kit Toyota Camry RAV4 TC Highlander Solara | eBay this kit inlcudes oil pump US $1,111.00 01 10 2 4L Toyota Scion VVT I Engine Timing Chain Kit w Oil Pump 2AZFE | eBay do you want to D I Y ... this is better than the repair manual . this is a youtube 30 minute how to on a VVT |

Dirty Hands,
indeed a DIY'er. Did an Ecotec a year ago but no Variable Valve timing and its still running. Still have concerns about the VVT actuator(that's what Haynes manual calls it). Can they go bad? or just get sludged up. They have vanes that move from oil pressure. That's what rotates the cam while the chain relationship to gear stays same. I think I am understanding that if I want a new gear on that I need the entire actuator. Not positive because some kits show two cam gears for the 2AZ-FE. That sucker can be expensive depending on brand. I noticed in the kit you sent link to it don't include the VVT and it don't include the balance shaft chain while in there might as well change as much as possible. Wouldn't be concerned about putting a Made in Japan kit, verdict still out on the China ones. Thanks for feedback, links etc. any other feedback appreciated |
i am no expert on that part
wait to see if someone else drops in to add to our discussion this is that engine repair manual in pdf 2AZ-FE chain stuff starts at page 24 http://www.shinny.co.uk/toyota/3MZ-F...Mechanical.pdf looks like you can clean that VVT actuator unit ..... but ... Turn The Sound /Music OFF |
