Oil Consumption Warranty

As some of you may know by now, Toyota has issued an extended warranty on Camry's with excessive oil consumption. I believe this warranty is for the four cylinder 2AZ-FE engine.
Look for your notice in the mail if you have this engine.

Got the notice and now in a consumption test. Dealer says bring it back after 1000 miles to check consumption. I believe Toyota says 1200 - whatever. Should be no problem with either mileage -- will probably burn a quart faster than either. The service advisor at the dealer said it was probably a leaking oil filter. Really -- "then why is there never any oil on the floor of my garage or in the driveway I asked." He could not explain.

Our 2007 Hybrid now with 138K miles has been a GREAT automobile.:) Never a problem except this. Its more than disappointing that Toyota waited until 2011 even to admit that this engine had this problem. And strains their credibility when Toyota says that 1 qt per 1200 miles is normal. Really?

So, until this notice (NOT A RECALL) I had been relegated to purchasing synthetic 5w-20 at Costco and just topping it up once it was down a quart. And, wondering what this car was going to be worth if I ever decided to sell it.

A real black eye for Toyota and their dealers.

Seems as if the 2007 models are the main ones having this problem. This alone would seem to point to a fault in the construction of the engine. I have a 2006, and it might use a pint between oil changes. I have a 162,000 miles on it.

The oil return holes in the piston oil ring groove plug up.

Years 2006-2011.

Also check the crankcase vent system (PCV) for plugging.

There is a class action lawsuit starting up on this oil consumption issue.

Thanks Joey P. I believe you hit the nail right on the head.
