oil filter

I need to change my oil filter on my 07 Camry. I am used to the twist off type.

I bought a "tool" at autozone that slips over the oil filter housing so that you can turn it. It broke as soon as I put the ratchet on it.

Is there a heavy duty tool that I can purchase to remove the filter housing?

I have never found the type that broke for you to ever work. Take it back and get your money back. I have always used the steel band clamp type that gets tighter the more you apply torque. You can get them to be used with a rachet or they come with a handle. Another I have also used with successis one with a nylon band that is attached to a steel square tube which uses a rachet wrench. It also gets tighter the more you turn it. Depending on access should determine which you use.

wow you broke that...dang that filter is on tight. you will want to try other things.

if all fails you need to bing it into a shop. a few members includinig myself have had filter issues before, and we ended up stabbing the filter with a screw driver and forcing it off. not good for a new car under warranty tho.

The oil filter housing is cast steel. You can not put a screw driver thru it. The filter is inside the housing. I am having trouble getting the housing to screw off.

Yes. The 07 Camry does not use the can filter. The replacement filter is just the paper part of the typical can filter. There is a steel housing that the filter goes in. You do not replace the steel housing. It is a permenant part of the engine, and you can not put a screw driver thru it. To change the filter you must unscrew the housing. Hence lies the problem. You must have to have a special tool that will fit it. I can not find a quality tool.

If it spins off then the band type steel filter wrenches should work. Ask the dealer what they use. If the outer housing is steel why don't you get a nut welded on the end and use a socket. It sounds like the last person to tighten the housing used a wrench and did not hand tighten asshould have been done.
