Toyota Camry: Shock Absorber Reviews

The Toyota Camry is a comfortable car, but you can always make it more comfortable and stable by replacing the shock absorbers. Here's a list of some of the most popular shocks for whatever purpose you want.

This article applies to the Toyota Camry (1997-2011).

A set of properly functioning shocks is one of the most important safety components to have on your Camry; they also factor largely in the comfort of your ride. Worn out shocks can affect your Anti-lock Brake System and Electronic Stability Control system, which results in lower brake efficiency and longer braking distances. When it rains, worn out shocks can lead to aquaplaning at lower speeds and an increased chance of skidding on wet roads. As far as comfort goes, a set of new shocks will reduce driver fatigue, increasing driver response and reaction time. They will also improve passenger comfort so you don't have to listen to your spouse or the kids complaining about the rough ride. The other benefits of new shocks are increased tire and ancillary suspension component lifespan. Here are some of the brands that will add value and comfort to your Toyota Camry.

Gabriel Ultra

Price – $40

Tube Design – Twin Tube

Adjustable – No

Nitrogen Gas – No

Warranty – Limited Lifetime

Mounting – Direct

Not the best looking shock out there, but they will certainly improve your ride. So if you're into having the look of a shock that belongs on the NASCAR Camry, this is not the shock for you. However, the Gabriel ultra shock is a technically sound shock. With variable damping, these shocks will keep your wheels planted firmly on the ground. The shock responds to the force of the bump or roll and increases damping as the shock compresses. It also has a piston seal and rod guide, which reduces leaks and friction, resulting in a longer lasting shock. The shock is also equipped with a chrome piston rod, which decreases the chance of corrosion, increasing the life of the shock. Recommended if you're looking for an OEM replacement shock.

KYB Gas-a-Just

Price – $50

Tube Design – Mono-Tube with Nitrogen Gas Chamber

Adjustable – Non-adjustable

Nitrogen Gas – Yes

Warranty – Limited Lifetime

Mounting – Direct

Certainly better looking than the Gabriel Ultra, the KYB Gas-a-Just shock will add more bling to the Camry. But the real beauty of this shock is the bigger single cylinder, which keeps the hydraulic fluid from having to travel far. The fluid is held at the top of the cylinder by high pressure nitrogen gas and a floating piston with a seal. The gas pressure cushions the ride under normal conditions, but when you need the performance during increased movement, the piston pushes into the gas chamber, which increases gas pressure, rapidly maximizing damping forces. Recommended if you're looking for a more durable shock.

Monro-Matic

Price – $50

Tube Design – Mono-Tube

Adjustable – Non-adjustable

Nitrogen Gas – Yes

Warranty – Limited Lifetime

Mounting – Direct

Definitely the best looking one of the three shocks on this list, the Monro-Matic will give your Camry that extra racing look. A mono-tube design also comes with a nitrogen gas chamber. The Monro-Matic uses a proprietary velocity sensitive valving with an all-weather fluid, which results in a significantly more comfortable and smoother ride. They also use a self-lubricating seal that is able to retain the gas more efficiently, thereby decreasing the wear in the chamber and extending the service life of the shock. Recommended if you're looking for shocks that will increase the comfort in your Camry.
