Default 1995 Camry water pump replacement - 6 cyl

My daughter's 1995 Camry is leaking coolant fluid and starting to make some noise. I believe it is the water pump. She needs to sell the car. How difficult is it to replace the water pump? How much time should I allow? Any special tools required? I thank you in advance.

If doing the job for the first time allow a Saturday or Sunday. Someone who has done it before may take 2-3 hours, a real pro under 2 hours.

As this job also requires removing the timing belt might review posts at Toyotanation on the subject of timing belt replacement for the 1MZ-FE model engine. This is has been discussed many times.

No special tools however:

You will need to remove the crank pulley bolt, the issue being holding the crank still while you turn the bolt (standard right hand thread). You can use a strap wrench on the pulley, remove the starter and attempt to hold a ring gear tooth with a screwdriver, an air wrench will work, or bolt a section of wood to the face of the pulley. Make the board long enough that it binds up with the floor or chassis when the pulley rotates. Make sure you drill a hole in the wood for the crank bolt socket.

The pulley is a two piece design, make sure you use a bolt-on puller, not a jaw type or you could damage the pulley. The puller will bolt to the holes on the face of the pulley.

The link below provides info on changing the belt, it is just a few more steps to change the pump. The gear of the water pump is not indexed to the belt thus no need to align the it before putting the belt on.

Suggest before starting out to bring the engine crank to TDC on the No 1 cylinder compression stroke. Then before removing the belt, mark everything to be able to return it to its original place.
