Hi,
Need some help in completing my fog light installation.
My Camry was pre-wired for fog lights so I got those installed (snapped the connectors together) at the front end, both sides, plus added a new switch on the column that accommodates fog lights and installed the relay and fuse under the dash, but the lights still don’t work. I know the new switch works because the headlight work!
What am I missing?
Was this a Toyota brand product add on if even available?
Suspect you added all the parts but the wiring for said parts is not there. The wiring is a little complicated.
The fog fuse powers the fog lights via the fog relay and its switch. The fog relay solenoid receives 12v from the tail light relay via the tail light fuse. The ECU completes the ground circuit for the relay solenoid that controls this switch. The negative terminal of this relay only need be grounded to chassis to complete the circuit and turn on the relay and with this close the relay switch..
The main body ECU operates the head lights also turns on the fog lights. It turns on the fog lights by grounding the fog relay solenoid as stated before.
Determine if the relay is getting 12v from the tail fuse when the light switch is turned to fog. That the relay socket has a red wire that leads to the main body ECU. That the socket is getting a constant 12v from the battery to power the fog lights via the fog fuse..
Fog relay socket position 1 is the tail fuse.
2 is the ECU red wire
The above to go to the solenoid.
3 goes to fog lights
5 goes to the fog light fuse
The above to go to the solenoid switch.
Since the car was prewired for fog lights, I was trying to save some time and energy by not running any wire . . . thought it would be just plug-and-play. The kit I bought came with everything, including all wires, light bulb plug and bulbs, 12V/40A relay, 15A fuse, dash switch What came with kit! New switch that’s for controlling fog lights (inside icon is what you would set it on to switch on fog lights) Old switch!
. . . the works! When I got into the front end to install the lights, I noticed that there was already receptacles for the lights zipped tied there so I figured the whole car is already wired for fog lights. The guy at the Toyota dealership who seems very knowledgeable thought that I shouldn’t have to run any wiring, just replace the switch on the steering column that accommodates fog lights, install the relay where there was an empty spot behind the dash and insert the 15A fuse in the appropriate place (interior fuse box) and I should be good to go . . . but not so!
Unless this was a toyota specific fog light kit the its probably not going to work as the wiring may be different colors. From what I know if your car didnt have lights from the factory then more then likely you got lucky and they used the harness for a car with foglights because they were short on non foglight harnesses. Now what that means is that somewhere under the dash there may be another loose plug/wire that needs to be plugged in which is why its not working.
Now me personally i would run my own wires and then find a spot on the dash or where ever you want the switch to go and run your wires there and either get a factory looking switch that should fit into a OEM location or cut an opening for a switch.
