Unhappy No Codes

I have a 96 Camry 2.2... Yesterday the check engine light came on, I followed directions on youtube etc. and jumped between TE1 and E1 (under diagnosis cap). But no codes come up. I tried several times following proceedures recommended on google, but the check engine light stays on steady. Absolutely no flashes????

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 96 requires a code reader plugged into the ODB port.

Some auto parts stores will read the codes for free.

No one in my town has a reader that goes back to 96.

If the car was imported or built in the USA after 1996 it is required to be ODBII compliant. Any ODBII code reader should be able to read the codes.
