Default Engine oil comsumption on Camry Hybrid 2007?

Hi,

My current Prius 07 start consuming the engine oil now and always lose around 1L of oil every 3500 miles.

I am planning to release this Prius and go with Camry Hybrid 07, however, after searching around on google and from some users, there are some people also experience with extra engine oil consumption.

Could you please advise if this engine oil consumption is the user issue or factory defect?

Your comment will be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
sanlen

Yes, the oil ring return holes in the piston clog up with carbon increasing oil consumption.

There is Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) on this. Toyota has an extended warranty and will do repairs IF oil consumption is over a specified amount. This being something like 1 quart (US) per 1400 miles (US) which is burning a lot of oil. If consumption is below this amount Toyota will do nothing.

There is also a class action suit on this issue.

The engine is also prone to head bolt threads pulling out of the block. Toyota also has a TSB and extended warranty on this.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your reply. Should i start worrying about this increasing of oil consumption?

My Prius was imported and there is no any warranty to be covered. I would like to get this fixed, what need to be fixed?

Your further advise will be very much appreciated.

The Prius doesn't have the same engine as the Camry. The Camry engine had the possible stated problems not Prius.

On the Prius, check the PVC system for plugging and the engine for oil leaks. If the engine is burning oil it will gradually get worse.

Is that 3500 kilometers or US miles?

Hi,

It is every 3500 US miles that i change the oil and i always stay with 5W-30.

As checked, there is no oil leaking within the engine compartment. I also checked the exhaust tail, it is very clean and there is no emission at all.

Regards,

How many miles on the engine?

1 quart per 3500 miles is reasonable enough. All engines burn some oil.

For oil to come out the tailpipe the consumption will need to be a LOT higher.

Any wisps of white smoke out the tail pipe on cold starts?

Check the PCV system which might be plugged or have other issues.

If not already using, consider changing to synthetic oil.
