Timing belt had been replaced by the previous owner. I’ve noticed the inside edge of the pulley is damaged. Looks like someone was prying on the crankshaft pulley to remove it and broke a few areas of the pulley edge. Would that cause severe engine vibration at idle and just above idle? It gets smoother the faster the engine revs up. Thank you for any advice.

 

What's the idle RPM?

Is the timing belt installed correctly (cam/crank timing correct)?

Broken teeth should not be a problem unless it allows the belt to skip a tooth.

Ign timing is set by the distributor location. Is the ign timing correct?

Any vacuum leaks? Check all vacuum hoses for damage or improper connection..

 

Sorry I mentioned the wrong part name. It’s the harmonic balancer that’s damaged

 

How damaged is the pulley? Its a two piece unit. Inner part and outer ring pieces with rubber in-between the two pieces. Has happened improper removal of the pulley results in separating the two parts.

 

Yes it’s two piece with rubber in between. There are 1inch chunks broken in two places. This harmonic balancer has the large outer pulley and smaller inner pulley. The large pulley is what is damaged. When I adjust timing it’s has no power when I adjust it to specs with the proper procedure on the hood label.

 

Suggest replacing the balancer just in case the old one breaks into parts when running from being damaged.

If the previous owner made such a mess of the balancer, what else is wrong? Suggest you check the timing belt installation for proper cam/crank timing.

If fixing these issues doesn't resolve the issue, you can then move on toward fixing it.

It has happened changing the timing belt results in poor engine running for a couple of engine starts. But soon the engine goes back to running normal.

Can’t seem to find a harmonic balancer in the after market websites or parts stores. Everything and everyone says out of stock. I’m still looking but it’s getting hard to find one
