Default Help required with 2001 Camry XLE

Car Specs:
- 2001 Toyota Camry XLE
- Six cylinder engine
- Automatic Transmission

Problem:

The car ODOMETER will not turn on even when engine is running and the car cannot speed up.

When the weather is HOT summer my car has this problem where the ODOMETER will not turn on or suddenly switches off while driving.
When the ODOMETER is NOT ON the car engine acceleration goes down very badly and it will NOT speed up.
When I try to accelerate it will be VERY SLOW acceleration and the RPM meter nearly touches RED zone.
I had bought the car 3 yrs ago around 60K Miles and now it has 90K miles now.
I have NOT done any major service on the CAR.

This problem used to be once in a while but now it is regularly coming and that too while driving it suddenly drops off.
Is there any issue with TRANSMISSION.
The car runs very smoothly when the ODOMETER is ON and there is NO issue with acceleration also.
Do any of you have a suggestion of something to try? Or is it as bad as I have feared? If the transmission needs to be replaced or rebuilt?

Thanks in advance

Can you clarify?

The odometer is not working, the speedometer is not working, both. If odometer is it an electric type (lights up) or manual having the little drums.

Both odometer and speedometer are NOT working, the odometer is a digital electric type which switches on when KEY is inserted.

The problem is when both ODOMETER and SPEEDOMETER are NOT working when driving the car...the acceleration falls and when I press the gas pedal the RPM meter goes near the RED zone but the acceleration is very slow...

Please let me know if you need more details.

Don't know.

When this happens try manually shifting to 2 or 1st gear. Determine what happens in Reverse. Turn the overdrive switch off.

Typical trans problems causing these symptoms are failed torque converter one-way clutch, problem with lockup clutch.

Do the dash meters go to zero, as in still work but now just indicting zero or not working as in are turned off?

The trans diff housing has a speed sensor that provides signals to the speedo and odometers. The part could fail resulting in non-working meters, but I don't think the meters would turn off.

There also might be a problem with the differential. The speed sensor runs off the differential gear.

Suggest you find a mechanic or go to the Toyota dealer. Having to rev the engine to max RPM to get the car to move can not be good for the trans.

Hi,

I tried all the options..changing to 2 gear..., reverse everything...
The gear shift works fine..only problem is acceleration...

The O/D OFF is NOT working when the this problem is there....

Not sure what is the problem...taking to Dealer tomorrow but not sure how to explain since this problem happens once in a while...and may not happen when dealer is checking the car

Just a guess but the speed sensor might be confusing the engine control?

Default 2001 Camry problem

I was so worried that I took the car to the TOYOTA dealer.
He took $120 just to check what the problem is and at the end of two days he just told be that I need to spend another $300 to do more tests on ECM to know the problem.

I took my car from the Dealer and went to a mechanic whom I know...
He changed the speedometer set with another one and it is working perfectly fine...

The problem was in speedometer set...once it has been replaced it worked with out any issues..

Now the problem is I need to get the SPEEDOMETER fixed...
My mechanic has told me that NO one fixes speedometers...

Can anyone suggest a place where I can get it fixed..
Thanks a lot...

Caton Radio in the Baltimore area repairs speedometers. So somebody does it.
