RPMs Rev but Car Doesn't Accelerate
Hello, I have a '99 MANUAL transmission with 119,000+ miles on it. For about the past 4 months, when I switch gears say from 2nd to 3rd the RPMs will rev but it will take a few seconds before the engine responds and the car accelerates. It doesn't happen all the time, but most of the time. Additionally, if I'm on the highway in 5th gear going about 60mph and I step on the accelerator to speed up, the same thing will happen... the RPMs will shoot up to about 5,000 - 6,000 RPMs before they fall back to normal and I finally am able to accelerate. I've been putting off taking it to a mechanic because I'm afraid of how much it will cost to fix. Any advice will help (besides telling me to pony up and take it to a mechanic haha).
Thanks.
Thanks.
you need a new clutch. probably has the oem one still in it. and because youve been revving it up like that you have burnt the flywheel and it will have to be machined. a new clutch disk, throwout bearing and pressure plate will be around $150 dollars.
well sounds like notahonda is right. u for sure got some slippage. the bad thing is the longer you go the more its going to cost... so pony up or get a manual and do it yourself. (good luck) just hope its the clutch if its only in one gear its the trans. unlikely though givin the year. i work at a parts store and its going to cost you much more than $150 if you have some one do it for you. your lookng at more like $800. i had a ford that did the same crap. it had 210k on orgnal clutch..lol. it cost 650 i bought the clutch kit also. go performance if you drive it hard.
if you want to get your hands dirty it will cost you about $400 for a clutch kit, comes with throwout bearing, pressure plate, alignment tool and the clutch disk. it also depends on what brand you buy. dont cheap out and buy one off ebay and if you do post up what brand it is and i'll let you know if they are good or not. "f1 racing" brand is horrible and is found on ebay <-- dont buy that. exedy is a good cheap clutch, many car companies use these stock on their cars. drive nice for 200-300 miles to break it in so it dosent fuse with your flywheel as well. make sure when you get your clutch done to resurface your flywheel. it cost me 30$ at a machine shop to get it done.
