Default Strange gear shifting/rpm issue. 2001 camry.

Hi

I have a 2001 2.2 litre camry. When the engine is cold below operating temp, my car takes off normally through the gears to I think 2nd or 3rd? However when I am coasting down the hill from my home at around 50 to 60 kmph, it briefly drops in revs on its own as if it wants to change up a gear however it doesn't do so. The revs return to normal and the car returns to the gear it was in instea of going up a gear.
Once the car has reached a certain temp after a few minutes driving it will change gears correctly. Other than this I think the transmission changes correctly with out slipping however it seems to be very slow reversing.
Also at higher speeds after a long day of city driving it seems that the car is intermittently lowering revs when coasting as if the car is going in and out of overdrive a lot. It's very difficult to tell if that is what it is doing or if there is an engine miss or something. This is at around 80 or 90 kmph. It kind of feels like an odd rumble and has nothing to do with the road or tyres etc. Just seems like a subtle change in power occasionally kind of like the air conditioner is cutting in and out a lot. But it happens whether the ac is on or not. Besides this the car seems to drive ok I am just concerned about ending up stranded. It changes through gears normally and kicks back when needed. Anyway any ideas about these issues woukd be appreciated. Thankyou!

Did the car always have this issue?

The transmission overdrive gear locks out when the coolant temp is low (prior to warm up). Is this what you are experiencing is a lack of overdrive gear at cold coolant temps?

Hi
Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure if it's trying to go into over drive as I'm not travelling at a high enough speed to go into overdrive. I have only had the car a few months and it has been doing it the whole time. If I let it warm up before I leave home it doesn't do it going down the hill from home. It's such a weird issue. I thought it did it yesterday once When warmed up going down a steep hill. Seems to happen when I take my foot off the accelerator pedal. The revs drop low for a second causing the car to feel like it's going to stall but then they go back up again even though I am still coasting down a hill with out my foot on the pedal. Thanks again

I've been doing some googling and have found it's normal for a car to not go into overdrive when cold. My toyota echo did the same thing. However I really am wondering why the rpm dips so much for a second and returns to normal when coasting. Seems to do it even if I have my foot resting on the accelerator as I coast downhill. This morning the car didn't do it because I deliberately went slowly down the hill at about 40kmph. So it didn't need to try for overdrive. It seems to try for overdrive and that causes the dip of rpm. When it can't get overdrive it returns to normal in 3rd gear. I'm wondering if there is an issue with a solenoid or sensor. Cheers. Kaybee.

Does this car have an overdrive lockout switch? If so turn the overdrive off and drive the car to determine if there is a difference.

Hi Yes it has an overdrive button. I turn it off today and the car didn't have the strange change in rpm as it does with the overdrive on.
Thanks.
