07 Camry-how handle accelerator problem?
Just got this from CNN: Toyota has been misspelled and should be spelled as follows: "General Motors". I have 2 Toyota Camry death traps and I am wondering what I should tell my wife (she has 2007 V6-Mine is a 2005 4cyl) if the accelerator does stick. The media says to hit the brakes with both feet while shifting into neutral, while turning the key off. Can you shift into neutral while the car is in motion? If you turn the key off won't you lose control of the car?
I could' a bought a chevy!

Typically one should be able to shift into neutral at any time. There is a shift console stop to prevent shifting from neutral into reverse. Make sure you wife understands NOT to push the override button on the shift console (as when going into Reverse or Park) when shifting into Neutral or she can move the trans into reverse or Park and damage the transmission. Perhaps she can practice this move.
Toyota states to turn the ign switch Off and to the ACC position, DON'T remove the key or the steering can lock. The engine will turn off of course and along with this the power steering. The car can be driving safely without power steering but be aware it will be harder to turn the wheel.
The car will not lose steering control with the power steering not working, it should be easy enough to steer the car to the side of the road.
The other issue is don't pump the brakes, the power brake system uses vacuum and pumping will deplete this source making pushing the pedal harder.
You and your wife can practice most of these moves yourself to gain experience.
