2002 4-Cyl Belt Noise
Hello All,
I have a 2002 XLE 4-Cyl, with 70k miles
Belts have been replaced at 50k miles, about 2 years ago
I've been having some noise lately
The noise does not happen when rolling, only happens as soon as I give it some gas from a complete stop or park, noise last for only a second (noise in D or R only, it doesnt happen if I rev it in P or N)
It sounds like the noise coming from one of the belts, it sounds just like if you have a cracked fan belt
Has anyone ever had this before?
Since noise only happens when car in gear, is it some transmission related problem?
Thanks
i dont know how to describe it.....
itshigh-pitch, like a noise from an very old belt.....
since the noise only happens in gears, is there any rubber, or belt thing between the engine and the transmission? or inside the transmission?
The trans is powered directly by the engine via a steel shaft. Inside the trans there are only gears.
Does the noise increase and decrease with RPM when in D or R and car not moving. Or does the noise only start up when the car moves?

thanks for your reply
the noise only last for about a second as i give it some gas in D or R at very low speed
the noise never happened when car isabove parking lot speed
the noise never happened when i rev it in P or N
since the noise sounds exactly like "belt noise", so i was thinking if there is any belt or rubber thing involved.....
um id check your bearings and pullies just cause the serpintine belt mau not be positiponed properley or may have slipped off of the track, also check the alternator its your tensioner check it if its too tight
i brought my car to a shop, after couple minutes of checking, they said the noise was caused by a bad tensioner, which doesnt provide enough of tension, cause the belt to wobble/vibrate when taking off
mechanic quoted me, $170 for the tensioner (special order), $40 for a new belt, and $70 labor
does the above sound reasonable to you? has anyone ever needed a new tensioner?

Mail order non-Toyota parts run $123-189 for the tensioner and $17-30 for the belt depending on the brand name.
Genuine Toyota parts would be on the higher price end.
So, the parts are a little higher but the labor OK.
