Default 2012 camry se starting issue

Hi, we have a 2021 camry se 4 cylinder. 77k miles. The car started having issues few months ago. It died at a stop light. After it died we could not start it again. The check engine is constantly on. The car will spin over but will not start. We took it to the dealership and they said it was a bad 12v battery. After the replacement of the battery the car seemed to work just fine for 1 month and started acting up. So we have kinda narrowed it down. When the car stalls, the only way is to disconnect the 12v battery and reset everthing basicly. afterwards the car starts and runs with no problems but within 15miles it happens again. Its happening more often now and yet still no dtc. Its extremely hot in houston. Any help would be appreciated

The check light is on but no codes? Are you also checking for proprietary Toyota codes?

Hi, yes the check engine light is on when the key is turned to the on position and when cranking the car. I have a generic scanner and it shows no codes. I just went to get the battery and charging system tested and they say the battery is good but voltage regulator in the alternator is bad….still trying to see if this is related to the issue. I don’t know how to check for Toyota priority codes

Could be the scanner can not read the ODB codes and not having the software read Toyota codes.

Do an internet search on Toyota codes for info.

All car makers are required to output ODBII codes. Most car makers also have their own codes.

One can buy a scanner to read only OBDII codes, or ODBII plus Toyota or another car maker(s), or OBDII plus say all car maker codes, etc. It all depends on what a buyer wants. Typically the more car makers codes the scanner can read, the more expensive it is..

Typically the codes read would be your key to the problem unless there is problem with the cars computer that is setting off the code in error.

Hi, I bought an obd2 reader only and it shows no codes. Weird thing is that it only happens when the car conditions are hot. Not as in the thermostat hot, it is normal operating conditions. The temp outside is hot, like 95-100 hot and the car has been running for awhile. It died today just sitting still in park with ac on. Of course couldn’t start it back up, it’s spinning over as normal. Had to disconnect the 12v battery and then connect it back on. Once that was done the car started and ran like normal

Does the check light ever turn off as when you disconnect then reconnect the battery?

High outside air temps then are the issue, not engine coolant temp?

As stated the trouble code be Toyota code and your scanner did not pick it up. Check if the scanner reads Toyota codes. If you can access the code you can save a LOT of effort in finding the problem.

When you disconnect the battery all codes are cleared. If the check light always comes back on then the problem appears constant.

It could be a failing sensor such as MAFor perhaps something with the idle control system.

Does the engine every quit when your moving as in car is not stopped and the engine is not at idle speed?

The car never dies while driving. Only when at a stop or in park.

outside tempt is 95-100.

engine coolant is normal temp.

when you disconnect the battery of course everything goes off like it should. When reconnected the car starts fine and runs fine til the next episode.

I’ve tried checking it with a cheap obd2 reader when the car does, but no codes are showing.

Very weird case. It’s like when you are disconnecting the battery it’s resetting not only the codes but something else. Then everything works like normal.

Find a code reader that readers Toyota codes.

I have tried 3 readers, cheap obd2, more expensive obd2 with vitals, and torque app reader and still 0 dtc

Review the scanner at the link below. Zoom in on the scanner screen for an icon stating Toyota. Do any of your scanners have this feature?

Amazon Amazon

ODBII and Toyota are two different coding systems.

If the check light is on constantly but your not getting any codes with either ODBII or Toyota the issue may be the ECU.
