92 Camry 2.2 Auto Not shifting properly
Have a 1992 camry. Transmission shiftf fine up through gears but on the way down appears to stay in high gear. If I slow to a stop as I come to a stop the motor starts to fall below 1k rpms. Then Dies. I have electrically checked both solenoids and the lock up solenoid. No O/D light flashing. No CEL codes either. If I remove the solenoid connections the tranny shifts fine from each position. Up and down. If I apply full throttle it seams to shift down a gear. The O/D light does flash when I remove the plugs from the solenoids. And gives proper codes or that. Any help would be appreciated. Car runs perfect except for trans issues. Thanks in advance.
The trans does not down shift at all?
The torque converter may not be unlocking. The converter locks up after a certain MPH.
Watch the RPM gauge after the trans shifts into 4th and the car continues to speed up. It should drop 2-300 RPM as the converter locks up.

The trans model is A140E.
It would be normal for the trans to downshift at full throttle

Yes if I drive the car normal starting in Drive. The car gains speed and changes gears at the appropriate points. Upon reaching 60 mph and the car in overdrive if I remove my foot from the accelerator pedal, the car will slow until the engine stalls at about 500rpm the tach falls smoothly with no signs of down shifting. The fact that is does down shift at full throttle is what is confusing. All of the solenoids show 15 ohms res. And the harness checks out. The only step I have not taken is to pull the pan and check the solenoids for the sound of them operating. I did the manual drive test as described in the FSM. And the transaxle shifts properly under manual control. And I also performed the stall tests. Converter shows good on those tests. The Previous owner says the transaxle was rebuilt approx 3 years ago. Thanks again.
Ok so now I have replaced the Dash cluster and verified the operation of the speed sensor and the speedometer. Connected lights to the shift solenoid output of the ecu. Jacked up front wheels and also tried this driving it down the road. Get proper out put from ecu for up shift but no down shift from ecu. The converter lockup signal comes and goes with application of the brakes. Converter unlocks just no down shift. Any other suggestions have not replaced ECU yet.
There transmissions may have a kick down cable or circuit. When the pedal is to the floor the cable or circuit overrides normal shifting and forces the trans to downshift.
There should be something in the manual about checking the solenoids.
The solenoids can be electrically powered by themselves, you should be able to hear them click without taking off the pan. The solenoid can be removed and tested with compressed air while powering to determine if the valve is opening and closing OK.

Have this fixed. Found no issues with the electronics. After replacing the dash and the ECM. Decided to pull the SL solenoid. Found the solenoid stuck open. Fixed this and now she is shifting fine.
Thanks for all the Help.
