Default 93 camry xle power antenna won't go up

My power antenna on my 93 xle won't work. I can hear the motor going on when I start and stop the car but the antenna won't come up. Needless to say the sound on the radio is really soft. Any ideas?

The antenna may need a new mast. The mast has a plastic cable with teeth in it that pushes and pulls the antenna up and down, these teeth can strip out.

As toyomoho says the nylon cable sounds like it is broken or stripped. You can pull the old mast and cable out if you remove the top nut holding mast in but the broken end will more than likely stay inside which will prevent you from simply feeding in a new cable and mast. I had to disassemble my unit to remove the broken piece before installing a new mast and cablebut used the opportunity to clean and re-grease. If you do disassemble watch for tiny washers that get lost in the grease and keep track of how parts go back together. Replacing with a completely new aftermarket unit may be the way to go or the Honda S2000 fixed antenna is also an option. Just Goggle.
