98 Camry 4 cyl Trouble Codes
So My 98 Camry with 157k became a victim of the CEL. 2 codes pulled up from auto zone: P0171 bank 1 too lean? P1135 Air Fuel Sensor heater circuit. The funny thing is my mechanic's comp pulled up ONLY the code P1130 which was the same as Auto Zone's P1135. He recommends o2 sensor (i have cali emissions so it is actually an Air fuel ratio sensor). I am kind of distraught between a Mass Air Flow and that ratio (both kinda pricey). Auto Zone guy said the 0171 code could be from pumping gas with the car started? And also before buying a possible sensor try to clean the air fuel ratio sensor? Please Help this Newbie!!!

The 1135 code could be causing the 0171 code. The code for California spec cars.
The 1135 code refers to a problem with the heater circuit on the A/F sensor. You mechanic should be able to test the test the heater circuit.
The 0130 code is a Federal spec cars.
Both refer to the same sensor, Bank 1, Sensor 1.

Thanks for the help, I just bought the A/F off ebay. Think it's a solid buy for 150, my mechanic was ironically asking more than toyota for just the part. He said the 0171 was a component of the front o2 sensor. Numerous people have now told me also not to pump gas with the engine running. They say it can cause the ECU to read a leak

The 0171 code can be generated for a number or reasons other then the A/F sensor. This would cause people to possibly think it is something else.
Unlike the 0171 code, the A/F code is very specific as to the problem area. Thus check the A/F sensor and circuit. Repair or replace as required and determine if the 0171 code goes away.
