alternate engine for '88 camry 4-cyl
Hello everyone, Caveman here. I've a slight problem with my '88 camry and am here seeking advice. The engine in my car, which I believe is a 3s-fe, has internal mechanical problems, according to my mechanic( a former Toyota Master Mechanic and a longtime family friend). We have been trying to find a low mileage engine in the greater Mobile, Alabama area to no avail. My questions are these: Did Toyota also utilize this engine in the Celica's and MR-2's and if so, what years ? Did these engines in these other vehicles require any type of modification(s) in order to be used in my year camry and if so, what specific modifications will we need to carry out ? My mechanic has an associate at a local salvage yard who would be able to consult his crossover files, however the man will not be back at his business until after January 5. Also, my mechanic's associate has a friend who was said to make a habit of substituting other engines into camrys(such as the 2.2 litre engines). Unfortunately, in order to consult with this individual,we must again wait until the associate returns on January 5. Hence my additional questions: if anyone knows of any other4 cylinder toyota engines that will substitute into my '88 camry LE w/A/T with a minimum of modifications(hopefully!), what would those engines happen to be, and out of what year and model(s) of vehiclesshould we expand our search into ? I apologise for the undue length of this post, but as I am a Camry Forums newbie (just joined up 12/26/2007), I am hoping to increase my knowledge in order that I might be able to maintain our camry. I also hope that I posted this inquiry into the proper forum! Anyway, any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thank You! - Mario
i think.. with the LEAST amount of modifications- ur best bet would be the obd1 5sfe out of the 92-95ish years. BUT-you might have to redo ur mounts and support- along with some electrical wiring. So; IMO- with the custom parts+engine+labor = cost of a 93+ camry. Good luck with that.
