On draining and flushing coolant on a Camry 2006 4cyl, the Haynes manual says to remove the thermostat before draining the radiator and the block.
Is that necessary? I seen a video on you tube and he didn't remove the thermostat, so, is it really necessary? lol! I am wanting to do the quickest way to drain and refill coolant. Thanks

 

If wanting to change the coolant, drain the radiator and refill.

If wanting to flush the engine remove t-stat or the water is not going to flow through the engine.

Not per Toyota, however it will drain out more old coolant.

Yes, if you are flushing, remove the thermostat. You do not want to push any sludge into that, especially under pressure if you are doing a true flush.

 

An "easy" way to "flush", if you don't want to remove the t-stat and deal with burping the air out of the system:

1. Drain the radiator
2. Refill radiator with DISTILLED water (1 gallon).
3. Run car to get temp up to open the t-stat and circulate fluid
4. Repeat steps 1-3 to go through about 3 gallons of distilled water.
5. Drain radiator
6. Put in 50/50 concentrate of PROPER coolant. Be careful here so that you use the right HOAT coolant, and not some DEX COOL thing that may cause you issues inside the engine block. Assuming that is the right one for your Toyota - check the specs to make sure
7. Run engine to temp to circulate coolant
8. Repeat steps 5-7 until you have put in 3 gallons of the 50/50 coolant
9. Let the engine get cold, fill up the overflow tank with 50/50 until it is at the full mark
10. Test final coolant with a cheap coolant gauge to make sure you have the proper mixture of coolant to water. If it is off, drain a bit and top off with the 50/50 mix.

Jiffy Lube will take your old coolant for free. This is the right way to dispose of the stuff!

 

3 gallons of coolant, I have a 4cyl camry 2006 the Haynes manual says coolant capacity is 6.6 quarts. that's like little over 1 and a half gallons, is this right?

 

6.6 quarts.

 

That's for the entire engine block and all? That sounds more like the radiator capacity, I would think. The point of 3 gallons is to replace all the coolant that is in the hoses and in the block and heater core, by circulating it into the radiator.
