Default Engine Rattle when cold

Hello,

I am new to this forum and I just bought a 1997 Camry LE 4cyl. (105,000 mi) After I start the car when it is cold I hear a rattling noise coming from the right side of the engine. I saw in other posts that it may be the timing belt. However, the pervious owner had the timing belt and everything else replaced. All of the belts are in good condition.

I did hear a short squealing noise from one of the belts this morning when it was cold and raining outside. Could this noise be coming from the belts instead of the timing belt? I am not sure how to tighten them.

The noise gets quieter when the car is warmed up, and completely goes away when the RPM's go above 2200.

I would really appreciate your thoughts!

Thank you!!!

Thanks! I am going to have this checked out. I think the noise may becoming from the water pump.

thats just as bad as the tensioner pully if you have to have the water pump changed change the oil pump timing tensioner and timing belt also.

I had (and now starting to have again) the exact same rattling your describing. I had the timing belt replaced and the problem went away for a while. The rattle free noise lasted about 30K. According to the mechanic that replaced it the first time, it was about to
break. Don't wait too long to have it checked.

Thanks rolo12543! I just got the car back yesterday. My mechanic said that the timing belt was stretched and was banging against the timing belt cover. This is were the vibrating noise was coming from. I had my mechanic do a complete job: Timing belt, water pump, thermostat, tensioners, all drive belts and coolant flush. I was not going to mess around with this one.

Thanks!
