level of difficulty
hi,
car: '95 Camry, 342,000 miles, 4 cylinder, 5 sp.
The tranny is leaking kinda badly where the larger shifter cable goes into the tranny. Is it difficult to remove this and replace the gasket/seal? What is this part called? Is it a dealer item or can I get it from NAPA or BAP or O'Reilly's?

Is this a model E351 trans? Look on the drivers side of door for a number starting with E such as E351, E51.
Is this the area having a bellows (flexible boot) on the side of trans? If so there is a shaft that slides in/out of trans as the gear selector is moved, the shift has a lip seal. Remove the boot to reveal a large screw in fitting, the fitting holds the seal.
Suppose one could carefully remove the fitting then replace the seal and reinstall. Seal would most likely be an industry common seal If you can figure out what part number is stamped on it (if any) or its size. Try a Toyota dealer first as they may have it listed in their parts data base.

I took a closer look at it today. It is not coming from the shift cable, but from the reverse switch right behind where the tranny holds the cables, then connects to the shift arms. It's making a mess making it appear that the cable is the culprit.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. It is much appreciated!

The leak is from the reverse light switch? The switch screws into the trans housing.
There is also a speed sensor that plugs into the trans housing and held in by a bolt. This would also have electrical wire to it.
Both are easy repairs.
Don't run out of trans fluid. Uses Dexron II which is no longer available, use whatever the equivalent is today. Fill side port until fluid starts draining out.

The switch in question was the speed sensor. I was going to replace the o-ring, but I pulled it out & it looked fine. It wasn't pinched, or stretched, or anything. I cleaned it up and the area around it & replaced it. We'll see if maybe it needed to be reseated or maybe it was too loose or something. I'll check it for leaks again tomorrow.

Yup, it still leaks. It looks like its coming from right underneath the electrical connection. This part is between $175 & $200 from AutoZone & NAPA. Anybody know a cheaper place?
Thanks for the help on this subject!

I can't swear to all things on ebay but I have had very good luck there. Once you nail down what part you actually need, you can explore your price points. I have a connection where I can get parts at cost and I have found them cheaper on ebay. I have also found that the quality is on par as well.
