Default PO0401 Code

Hi everyone. I just purchased a 2001 Camry for my daughter. When I test drove the car the check engine light was not on. Two days later the check engine light appears so I put a scanner on it. The code that returned was PO0401 which is "EGR flow insufficient." I'm hoping someone can tell me what this means and how I can fix the problem.

The car seems to run fine and operate as it should but my OCD wont allow that dang light to stay on. I'll lose sleep over that. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Default

EGR = exhaust gas recirculation.

There is an adjustable valve that reroutes exhaust gases back into the engine to lower combustion temps and improve emissions.

If the EGR system is not working properly, one issue could be lack of sufficient exhaust gas into the engine. In the event this code is set.

Typically this problem is a carbon plugging the EGR valve or EGR plumbing. The fix is to remove the valve and clean the carbon out.

Or it could be another component.

It is a common code.

What type of engine V-6 or 4-cylinder?

If the engine is a 4-cylinder see link below which will provide a description of the system.
