Toyota Camry Check engine light
I have a 2001Toyota Camry and put it in the shop because the check engine light was on.I spent over $800. and the light is still on. The mechanic said I probably have a pin hole somewhere and it takes a special machine to locate the problem and he doesn't have that machine. Does anyone know what the problem could be.I am living on medicare nowand don't have alot of money to experiment. Thanks
When the check engine light comes on, a trouble code(s) is stored in the engine computer. The code(s) are used to troubleshoot the cars systems and find the problem.
The mechanic must have downloaded any code(s) using a code reader that connects to the computer by an electrical plug under the dash.
In order to help would need the code or code numbers. Examples of code numbers are P0440, P0446, P1133, etc. They all start with a P and have 4 numbers after the P. Perhaps these numbers are located somewhere on the service record you have.
The service record would also have what parts were replaced.
Also what engine type does the car have, 4 or 6 cylinder?

Code 420 indicates converter replacement. The price quoted for the Toyota part is typical.
To save on cost many owners opt for an aftermarket converter which is much cheaper. Some aftermarket converters come with the exhaust pipe attached making for a bolt-on repair, others require the old converter be cut out of the exhaust and a new one welded into place. The cheapest route is an aftermarket part, not Toyota.
The link below has examples of converters and costs for mail order parts for the 4 cylinder engine:
2001 TOYOTA CAMRY Catalytic Converter
Camry's built to California emissions standards may have two converters, one on the exhaust manifold the other under the car. There would be a sticker on the hood or side of door stating what emissions spec the car was built to, California or Federal.
The other codes are for the cars fuel tank evaporation emissions system. Did the dealer diagnosis the problem component for these codes?

The assy and valve you list are normally linked to these codes. The issue could also be just one replaceable part of the assy but this would require further diagnostics.
The canister and VSV can be purchased aftermarket to save money.
Replacing the parts as recommended by the dealer should solve the problems. Toyota parts are No 1 however prices are much higher then aftermarket. If cash is a problem take the repair sheet to an independent shop and obtain a repair quote for parts and labor.
Or perhaps you know someone that works on cars on the side for extra cash. You can buy the parts mail order from sites like Rockauto.com then have them install them. There are common DIY repairs.
None of your problems require immediate repairs thus you have time to shop around. The car will not pass an emissions test if required for license tabs.
