Default What part is this?

Hi Guys,

I'm helping my roommate fix his 2001 camry 4 cylinder that was throwing obd codes 441, 442, and 446.

His air intake hose was cracked so we replaced that. In the process of replacing that we saw a big hole in one of the hoses that connects to the air intake hose. The hose appears to be permanently attached to the top of a little box.

He needed to drive the car, so he just duct taped the hole. We're wondering what the part is though so we can replace it, and find out if it is in fact a part of that box.

Here are a couple pictures. Thanks a lot for the help!

The box is there to dampen engine intake air noises. I don't think it has any parts beyond being a box connected to the intake hose.

Called an acoustic dampener

The codes are for the fuel emissions evaporation system.

Check for other cracked hoses in the engine compartment connected to the larger intake hose or air cleaner box and the smaller ones connected to the throttle body.

The evap system is located under the car in front of the gas tank. Check there area for cracked hoses. Or could be a VSV (vacuum hose electric switch) or pressure sensor.

The link below is for a different Toyota model but provides an very good idea of what the system is, does and looks like:
