Default 97 header on 96

I was wanting to know if I could put the 97 2.2L header and down pipe on my 96 2.2L. I believe the 97 cat is some where after the downpipe and the 96 is right under the header. So could I put the 97 on and bypass the cat and weld the end of the down pipe to the remaider of the 96 exhaust. Any help would be great.

The CAT locations may depend on if the car meets California or Federal emissions. Calif has the CAT right after the manifold and a second one on the exhaust pipe.

There are a few issues here, one if the car has the two CAT system removing one or relocating is illegal. If your area has emissions tests especially a visual and inspection the car may not pass inspection. Determine just what emissions inspection your area has.

Check you car and detemine if it has two CATS, one on the manifold the other on the exhaust pipe.

You may be able to remove and reinstall the exhaust pipe CAT on the new exhaust. Keep in mind the exhaust system has a flex pipe (a section of flexable pipe) between the engine exhaust system and the pipe that runs down the bottom of the car.

You may be able to have a shop install exhaust flanges to allow bolting everything up. Keep all the old parts in case you sell the car or the emissions laws change.
