Correct orientation of OEM intake manifold gasket? 5S-FE 2.2 Liter
One side has very small ridge encircling each hole. As a result the other side has a dip encircling each hole. Which side faces the manifold? Does it matter?

I just installed a fantastic Mahle gasket on my '98 Celica and it occured to me that the embossing is mostly a structural addition to prevent sagging in the middle since on the 5S-FE it hangs by the ends until pressed. I chose to place the peaks against the manifold. The factory service manual has no instruction regarding this.
