Boots can fail at around 130K or maybe not at all.

Typically if a boot fails and is not found soon enough damage to the CV joint can result. This is one reason most people just change out the axle. The amount of labor to get the axle out and install a new boot is the same to install a new axle, and who knows if the axle was damaged as a result of the damaged boot.

However, Toyota now has a split boot available that appears to be reliable, see link below. Unlike other brands of split boots that seem to fail much sooner rather then later.

Toyota Genuine Parts: Split Boot Kits

Using this boot will save a LOT of labor hours. Suggest you find out if the kit is available for you car.

To save money suggest you inquire if independent shops (with lower labor rates) are using or can install the Toyota boot.

Guessing maybe 1/2 hour to install a split boot. A non-split boot would take longer as the axle needs to be taken out then taken apart.

That's not typical. If the boots are not split open change them ASAP before damage to the CV joints occurs. Look into the Toyota split boot, add more grease when changing.
