Default 2001 - 188K - carbon on cyl head - best fix?

Hey y'all, I have a 2001 with 188K on her. That is NOT near enough miles for a Camry IMHO. Had Knock Sensors replaced to pass emissions. Mech said carbon on cyl #6 piston and tried to dissolve over the weekend. Check Eng Light still on, $1300 later...car is NOW making a whirrr-ticking sound like when you put playing cards in your bike spokes. Worse with AC on. Worse at idle, better at 30mph. Mech suggested engine replacement...They used a 3 part induction cleaner. The car runs worse than it did before they messed with the carbon build up. Which way do I go? Can my baby be saved?

Did the engine run OK prior to the work?

If check engine light in on, what are the trouble codes?

Use a section of rubber hose as a stethoscope to narrow down the area of the noise.
