Default camry 2002 4 cyl. auto.

The engine light is on all the time.
My local dealer says they checked the electric system. The went to the famous codes and replaces somes parts from the VVTT ? I think is part of the cam to no avail.
They now want to replace the timing chain at a cost of $1400. When I asked the mechanic what'snextif it doesn't solve the problem, he says he doens't know...
The engine is working very well, no vibration or misfiring.
I suspect something simple they might have miss.
I checked the gas tank cap(seems o.k. although???) and the female part of the safety belt(passenger) has been replaced.

I hope some help is coming along, otherwise I'll be in for expensive repairs if I belive the dealer.

Well, for starters I don't know of any timing belt issue that could cause a Check Engine light. On top of that, timing belt replacement by the dealer should cost about $300 for a 4-cylinder engine.

The timing chain is supposed to last the engine life...
Is it possible to by-pass a code and see the next one? to elinimate the easy troubles first. I am told (mechanic) this is not possible...
