Default VIN Number Country Manufactured

Well ordering a part the parts guy asked for my vin number. I didn't have it on me at the time. Then he asked if I knew whether the car was made in the US or Japan.

I had no idea that they where made in two countries.

He said the vin number would tell me this.

Mine is a 96 Camry. How can I tell where it was made?

The 1st letter or number of the VIN is the country of manufacture.

J = Japan
1 or 3 = USA
2 = Canada

The sticker on the drivers door should also state if the car was made in Japan.

I usually use 1 for USA, I didn't use 3 at all.
