This article applies to the Toyota Camry (2007-2011).

A radio is the central piece of entertainment hardware on your vehicle. If it malfunctions, it makes for a silent, or even uncomfortable, ride. The standard radio contains cool features like MP3 compatibility and navigation. To protect you from boredom and thieves, older Toyota models would have an anti-theft unit in place that required their users to input a code whenever the head unit lost power. However, after 1997, Toyota stopped using that system. Because you no longer require a code to install a new unit, replacing your radio is very easy – just use the following the instructions to get the job done.

Materials Needed

  • Pry tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 10 mm socket
  • Socket wrench

This process focuses on replacing a stock radio unit. However, it can also be used as a reference for installing an aftermarket head unit.

Step 1 – Remove the shifter trim and handle

You are going to need to remove most of the center console trim in order to access the radio assembly. So, grab your pry tool and wedge in between the shifter handle and chrome piece to separate them. Then unscrew the shifter handle and remove both pieces of trim.

  • Now look at the center console, and grab the left and right trim pieces. Pull them off by-hand carefully.
  • Wedge the pry tool underneath the shifter console to pop it off.
  • Remove the shifter console trim.

Step 2 – Remove the air vents and bottom tray

You'll now see two mounting screws for the bottom tray. Use your Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws, and then pull out the tray. There are two accessory outlets you need to disconnect prior to the complete removal.

  • Pry the air vents off. Don't worry, they will just slide out of place.

Step 3 – Remove the radio bracket bolts

There are four 10mm bolts holding the radio bracket assembly in place. Use your socket to remove them.

  • Once the 10mm bolts are off, pull the radio (while it’s still attached to the bracket assembly) out and disconnect the wire plugs.

Step 4 – Remove the radio

The head unit on your Toyota Camry is rather large and held in place with three bolts on its left and right side. You can either use an 8mm socket or Phillips screwdriver to remove them. The climate control panel is also held in place by the same bracket. Because you will need to remove the climate control unit from the radio assembly, also remove the Phillips mounting screws on one of the sides.

  • With the bracket off, slide the climate control unit off of the radio assembly.

Step 5 – Replace the system

  • To replace it, mount it to the bracket.
  • Connect the climate control unit.
  • Connect the radio plugs.
  • Mount the bracket back to the car.
  • Install the air vents and bottom tray.
  • Install all the removed trim panels.
