2000 Camry 2.2 stumble at cold warmup
Hello every one. I am new in this forum.
I have 2000 Camry 2.2 for almost 8 years. Before than that I had 1999 Camry 2.2l . The problem that I have with both of these car since day one that I own them is; when turn on the engine in the relatively cold morning or any time after sitting for a while, the engine RPM goes up and depends on how cold outside temperature is engine RPM goes to almost 2000 and gradually goes down as coolant temp goes up. This is normal as I know on all Toyota vehicles from at least that years. During this high cold idling the engine stumbles two or three times (only at cold idling that rpm goes to above 1500) but after starting get warm every thing is fine. I have never figured out why engine stumble during cold idle warm up. But the problem is I started to get check engine light on with two code ; P0300 and P0301. I erase the codes but again come on after two or three weeks. As i said every thing is fine after warm up or starting driving down the road. This problem happens only in cold winter that at cold idling in the morning engine rpm goes above 1800. Spark plugs and wires replaced with Denso although the old ones were perfectly fine. fuel and air filter replaced. If anyone has experienced same issue please help me. Thank you.

Hi, thank you for response. Check engine light came on when engine cold. When I looked at OBD scanner, it show (for p0300 and p0301):
eng RPM 1945
IAT 1 (Celsius)
ECT 12 (Celsius)
STFT -2.31 %
LTFT - 0.78 %
MAP (kPa) 40.00
Calc load % 39.61
Veh Speed 0 km/h
and yes, engine runs perfectly fine after warmup.

I think IAT and ECT sensors works fine because scanner tool show correct temp when cold (1 for IAT and 12 for ECT pretty normal when outside temp is about -5 C on cold morning) and I track it with live data as engine warm up and coolant temp goes up to about 182 F after completely warmed up. I said engine stumble , I mean it cuts off briefly , like engine turn off for about half second and again turn on by itself. I think this is best description. This only happens in winter cold mornings, not in summer time morning that outside temperature is 60F or up. I removed IAC valve and cleaned completely and put new gasket two years ago, but did not help it.
You are stating the combination of cold temps/engine and high cold idle until warm up = these trouble codes?
If the issue has been going on year round, what happens when the outside air temps are warm as in summer? Assume the idle does not go up as when cold?
If the engine seems to be on/off dying when cold perhaps some valve or such is working when it should be closed. A problem EGR system can cause the engine to quit and or generate the codes. The system should be off until the engine is warm. Can bypass the EGR valve control system to make sure it is off. Use the info in the link sent to you do this. Make sure you plug any vacuum hoses.
Might be an injector issue. Can check injector resistance of No 1 cylinder and compare to spec.
The IAC valve control bypass air and with this idle speed. The engine idling up when cold indicates the valve is working.
Might be fuel pressure from a problem pump.
Any chance of wiring issues such as bad connections at the ign coils, etc? If you have a hair dryer try heating the coils when cold to simulate engine warm conditions.

Hello again, after almost 10 months I still have this problem with my 2000 Camry 2.2l. Now that here very day and morning air temperature is below 18F , I have this engine cut off for one time or two each warmup cold start at around 1980 RPM.
I have this problem from day one about 9 years ago that i bought this car with 80K miles. But since 2 years, it start illuminate check engine light on with P0300 with p0301 and some times add p0302. I did all most of the directions you mentioned above on last response includes using hair dryer on the coils. But I did not check the resistance of injectors.
Problems still exist , now I have other issues sometimes on the wet rainy days with high humidity, engine looks low in power and need to push hard on accelerating pedal to move from stop or for speeding up at roads than usual times.
any suggestions.
Thank you.

Engine issues when it rains/humid tend to point to ign problems as in ign wires, coil. bad wiring. Does the check light come on with the stumbling?
How is the engine wiring as in moisture now possible causing a short?
When the new problem occurs (with the rain/humidity) you could open the hood at night and look for electrical arcing. Some times one can see the problem.

Thank you for responses. This problem even accrued today that the air is relatively dryer than rainy days, but very cold and snowy 18F. I thought I have low tires air pressure due to cold but all are good about 37 psi. I looked the wires at dark night , but i did not see any sparks and looks good. They should be ok because i replaces them 5 years ago with NKG blue wires from auto part. There is no codes other than p0300 and 3001 for morning cut off the engine.
I have those 2 codes almost every morning that engine stumble. the go away and come back again .

Default Brief Engine CutoffWhen warming up in cold weather, my 2001 Camry 2.2 engine briefly cuts off then immediately back on. When I first got it, it used to start up easy then kind of ease into a warm up. Now the engine runs real fast at cold starts, dies that brief cutout thing after about 60 seconds then proceeds to idle do an to 750 rpm when warm. Is my ecu going out?
I found this post from another member of the forum that own 2.2l Camry. My problem is exact the same.
