2001 Camry timing issue 4 cyl
I was asked by my grandmother to fix her car and found out that she had broken her timing belt and had her car towed home. So i got the kit from the store and went over to her house and weird thing is there was no timing belt cover. How do i adjust timing without the cover that has the marks?
No timing belt cover as in no timing belt marks available. Before proceeding suggest getting the cover(s) or risk damaging the new belt from debris, etc.
You can check if the No 1 piston (closest to the drivers side) is at TDC by removing the spark plug and installing a rod. Make sure the rod is long enough it will not drop into the cylinder if the piston is at its lowest point.
Rotate the crank CW until the key way in the crankshaft is up. This should be TDC but determine if the rod movement up had peaked as in the piston is at the top.
Rotate cam pulley until the hole in one spoke aligns with the notch on top of the cam upper bearing mount.
Mark the belt and pulleys after the belt is installed as you will be rotating the crank 2-times CW to check if the alignment has changed. Leave the upper mount and alt off in case you need to realign the cam/crank timing but make sure the alt wiring is protected from grounding.
Once all seems OK, try to start the engine. If the engine starts and runs OK the cam/crank time is OK. If not it is off and needs to be realigned.
It is possible for the cam/crank timing to be OK but the engine take a few starts to now idle properly.
When satisfied with the timing reinstall all parts.
