Default 93 Camry Stalls when I put it in gear

Hey everyone, I have a 93 Toyota Camry that I took to a mechanic because it wouldn't stay running. The mechanic replaced the AIC valve, battery, and plugs. He also bypassed the power steering I believe. The next day I was driving the car home and it started to overheat. There was smoke coming from the power steering reservoir, which turned out to be bone dry. I got the car home and filled the powers steering, also made sure there was plenty of water in the radiator. Started the car, and it idled fine. Then once I put it in gear(reverse or drive), it stalled out. Can anyone give me a lead as to what to do next? Besides calling the mechanic.

The car has oil. We did find that the transmission fluid was nearly bone dry.
