When do you know your fuel pump is going bad

You know when it goes bad when no fuel gets to the engine, fuel lines are void of fuel before the pressure regulator, typically.

From the fuel filter when you remove it and turn the ignition key there should be a squirt of fuel, If no fuel is visible than there is a problem with the fuel pump.
