Check the adjustment of the rear break shoes. Too much clearance between the shoe and drum will allow excess brake pedal movement.
Toyota does not list a procedure for bleeding the ABS thus assume there is none.

OK, sounds good. I took it out for a drive today and really played with the brakes. Despite the sponginess, they're working very well. I slammed on them numerous times....everything seems OK. However, will check the shoes and see if they can be adjusted. I might benefit from some new shoes as well.
