Default Car won't start please help me!!!

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!! I have a 1996 Camry. It has 218,000 miles on it. Ok, over the last month, we have had some work done to our car. It all started when the timing belt went out. A mechanic put a timing belt kit on, replaced the water pump, and fixed the exhaust leak we had. A week later we had to replace the air conditioner compressor. So now the car is not wanting to start. It would turn over but wouldn't crank. So we replaced the fuel pump. It worked fine for 3 days, but now it won't crank again. It turns over but doesn't start. The fuel pump is pumping fuel. Also, I don't know if this will help or not but before all of this started the gas hand could always be read without the car being on. Well now it is bottomed out below empty even when turning the key over. It has a half a tank of gas though. What could our problem be??

V6 or 4 cylinder engine?

How do you know the fuel pump is working and pumping fuel?

Whoever replaced the pump would have also needed to disconnect the gas gauge sender wires. The pump and sender are held together as a unit and removed as one unit. The pump can then be separated from the sender unit.

Perhaps there is a problem with wire connections or the sender inside the tank. Would assume this is a result of the pump being replaced and something related to the sender not being connected back up correctly.

Have you checked for ign spark when the engine is cranking?

It's a 4 cylinder. It was my brother-in-law who changed the fuel pump out. When I say its pumping fuel, my husband disconnected something and we tried to crank it and fuel squirted out. I don't know the correct terms because I'm car illiterate. Hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

Have your husband check the ign system for spark.

If spark try pressing on the gas pedal when the engine cranking.

When it doesn't start, check for ign spark.

It wouldn't crank or it wouldn't start?
