There was another thread on this subject. Suggest a search.
If you strip the 2001 engine down to a short block (with balance shafts), then add back the 93 parts it might be OK. Just switching exhaust, intake, etc. is not enough.
The basic engine is the same. Around 1994 the balance shaft gear tooth count was changed. Any crank needs to match the balance shaft tooth count.
Later years had minor changes to compression ratio. After 1996 the engine incorporated remote cam and crank sensors and having no distributor. The head and oil pump housing incorporating mounts for the sensors. The 1996 had a remote mounted camshaft sensor.
There were two engine versions. One meeting California emissions standards and one for federal. The California version uses a different head and other parts.
Do some research on the differences between engines.
