Default Camry Microchip Key Scam at Wal-Mart

So over the weekend, I bought my new-to-me base model 2010 Camry with 45K miles on it. Well anyway, I usually have an extra key made for all my vehicles I've owned and bolt it somewhere under the car with a wingnut. I was just at wally world and decided to get another key for this same purpose. So the lady tells me that it's a microchip key and it'll be $50. I told her that I just wanted a flat key for the door and she tells me that she couldn't do it. Anyway, I ended up going to Home Depot and had a flat key cut. Turns out the car unlocks, starts, and runs just fine with the flat key...no microchip needed.
