2009 Camry Hybrid

The tail lights on my '09 Camry Hybrid do not work when the headlight switch on the steering column is in the 'Auto' position but they do work when the switch is set so the headlights are always on. The brake lights work fine. What could be the issue here?

The owners manual lists what lights turn on when set to "Auto"

 

Thank you. We checked it during the day, and now, embarrassingly , I realize that we assumed that the tail lights would come on when only head lights were on. I will check it at night when the headlights turn on.

 

Yes, seems odd but that's what the manual states.

 

That is a little odd, like you say. You'd think that having tail lights on in the AUTO position would also provide more visibility albeit from the rear instead of the front.
