Default 1999 Camry Transmission Problem

Whats up all.

Fellow Toyota owner here (2000 Celica GT-S.) My buddy just came over here and his 1999 Camry is having some major trouble. Im well versed in automotive systems (Im going to school for Automotive Technology.) I wanted to throw this out and see if there was any solution other than replacing the transmission that I am overlooking or maybe a common fix for Camrys (TSB/recall.)

Car Specs:

- 1999 Toyota Camry
- 5S-FE inline four cylinder engine
- A140E Automatic Transmission

Problem:

The car will not pull in 1-3 or overdrive. It just revs as if the selector is placed in neutral. The car DOES work in reverse. The ATF level was EXTREMELY low. I added some Toyota ATF to it and ran the selector through all the postions and checked the level again. The level was within spec according to the marks on the stick. However, no luck. The car still does not move in 1-3 or OD. There is no DTC thrown or anything like that.

When I first pulled the stick out of the transmission I noticed debris which is not good at all. My diagnosis is that the tranmission needs to be rebuilt/replaced. Probably something with the bands or something like that, its hard to say without tearing it apart.

Do any of you have a suggestion of something to try? Or is it as bad as I have feared? If the transmission needs to be replaced what kind of money are we looking at for a used/rebuilt A140E?

I am not looking for any type of performance add-on or modifications or anything that. Its his daily driver and thats all thats its ever gonna be. So, OEM solutions only please.

Thanks in advance,

Black00GTS

gosh I hate it when it comes to transmissions the 2nd worse thing to fix besides the engine itself. anyway sorry to hear that. I do think that the transmission may need to be replaced and then after that have it serviced. I'm doing the best just trying change the fluid less than 20,000 miles just to be on the safe side because who has $4,000 to replace a transmission. its costly thats for sure. o yeah make sure that fluid is not leaking below.
