Default 2007 Camry ? for a new driver

I am going to purchase a 2007 camry XLE. Over the next 4 years each of my kids will get their drivers license and be driving this car. I was going to get the 4 cylinder since everything I read says to avoid putting too much horsepower in the hands of a new driver. My concern is whether the 4 cylinder might have too LITTLE power for getting on and off the highways and for passing on country roads when driven by an inexperienced driver. Does anyone have the 4 cylinder? could you comment on your impressions of the cars pickup in these situations? Thanks

Not at all..

Camry has really good pick up. I dont say anything if they are driving really crazy like 210 KM/hr all the time..

Definitely not. The 2AZ engine, 4 cylinder in 2002 and newer Camry, is an improvement over the previous 5S engine. It is sufficient for daily driving and getting up to highway speeds.

my 92 4-cylinder freakin halls on the freeway!! that thing has plenty of power. its got lots of get up and go, you punch it and bam, you better hold on. im sure the newer ones would do even better.

Nevermind. I just read the latest issue of Car and Driver. They did a comparo with the 4cyl/auto Camry with a posted 0-60 time of 8.7 secs.

The reason I was asking in the first place was due to a test drive where we could not tell a huge difference in actually driving the 4 vs 6 cyls, but I know the 6cyl does sub-seven time for 0-60.

I just purchased a 2007 Camry 4 banger, and while it's not that swift going up hills, it's sufficient to merge and pass on the freeways. I'm still breaking it in, so I haven't pushed it, but I think it will be good for what you intend it to do. I, too, will have two teen drivers (one this year) who will drive the car, and I fell they won't be doing any drag racing, but the car will get them where they need to go safely and surely. Good luck with your car!
