Default '87 Camry Slow Acceleration

I'm dealing with a new issue with my 87 Camry. It takes forever to accelerate to 20 mph, but once it gets to 20 it rides just fine. But, it crawls from a stop. The ECM was bad, so my mechanic can't get a reading on the engine. He is replacing the ECM. Has anyone else ever dealt with this, or have any insight on what it might be, and what it might cost? I'd really appreciate any input.

What is the RPM doing, slow to rev or rev's but no power.

If auto trans try manually down shifting to 1st.

It is slow to rev w/no power. I've tried downshifting w/no luck. Someone on another panel suggested it might be "Throttle position sensor faulty. Low/reverse clutch burnt."
This is Greek to me, since I'm just a novice.

Suggest waiting until the computer is fixed. Then determine if any codes pop up.

When starting out try to determine if the trans is shifting through gear or is stuck in a low gear and never shifts until after 20 MPH. As such the trans may be starting out in 2nd, not 1st.
